In a recent article posted on Columbuzz, a submitter accused area high school football coaches of thinking they own the students by NOT allowing them to play on the Columbus Rugby Football Club team.

Columbuzz staff talked to Coach Perry of the Columbus Rugby Football Club! He tells us that while he does wish that the local high school football coaches WOULD work closer with their club, he assures us that he does not believe the coaches would have said that a student athlete could not play rugby. Instead, Coach Perry believes that local coaches most likely prefer student athletes to participate in varsity sports instead of club sports.

Coach Perry does believe the coaches do say things to the boys, and encourage them to focus on the sport that they are involved in at school. He also knows that they give the kids there some misinformation regarding Rugby being too dangerous. Coach Perry cited a Harvard University study in our conversation, saying that Rugby is about as dangerous as Soccer with concussions and shoulder injuries, etc. It is a safe sport, but does require some contact.

Columbus Rugby Football Club has been established since 1997. It does not really interfere with high school football. Rugby begins in February and is finished by Memorial Day weekend. However, football does require athletes work out, which interferes with Rugby practices. The club just tells the students to show up after they are finished with their football workouts.

The Columbus Rugby Football Club's primary goals are:

(1) to develop our athletes and maximize each individual's contribution for the benefit of the team as a whole;

(2) to promote physical activity as a means towards achieving and maintaining a healthy lifestyle;

(3) to instill the professionalism of the sport of rugby with an emphasis on fair play and true sportsmanship in all our athletes; and

(4) to promote the sport of rugby in Columbus, Indiana and surrounding areas.

They are very successful too! They are:

2012 Boys Indiana Rugby State Champions

2012 IRFU Division III State Champions

The Rugby Football Club is offering a new Rugby league for 5th and 6th graders and will be working with Foundation for Youth and PAAL. Look for information about that in the next few weeks at www.foundationforyouth.com.
